Today, SPE UNSW visited the Santos offices in Brisbane, where we were welcomed with an introduction from Robert Simpson, General Manager of Upstream Operations followed by technical presentations from a production engineer, reservoir engineer and a drilling and completions engineer all involved with the GLNG (Gladstone Liquefied Natural Gas) project. They detailed the technical aspects of coal seam gas, challenges faced when compared to conventional resources, and typical days in their lives. Additionally, we were toured throughout the Remote Operations Centre where key personnel monitor and maintain hundreds of wells and pipeline distribution 24/7. The command centre highly optimises the workflow of well-to-market (or LNG-to-export), and saves on operating costs, requiring fewer field crew to service wells only when necessary. This visit was a fantastic insight into how Santos manage and undergo general operations and production of their Queensland assets.
